Adolescent life in our society is far from easy. T(w)eenagers often blame themselves for the troubles they experience. When that is too painful, they can become angry or moody with us, have trouble concentrating on tasks, or shut themselves away as they retreat into towers of isolation.
But we don’t have to let them stay at such a distance from us. Teens and tweens need their parents to reach out for genuine connection. Neuroscience has revealed much about what is happening in the teen brain (it’s not “just hormones”) and what teenagers need to navigate the tricky waters of adolescence and grow into healthy, thriving adults.
We can find doors into their world. We can learn to stay thoughtful and present through the most intense of their feelings. We can love this amazing time of their life.
This talk will help you understand the things that make life challenging for our teens and tweens, and cues for decoding their behaviors. You’ll learn how to separate your own teen experiences so they don’t cloud your ability to see them with fresh and present eyes.
Additional topics:
- Learn to identify the connection makers and breakers that are most impactful for your child
- Learn to build good support for yourself to process your feelings of grief, anger, frustration, confusion, exhaustion, embarrassment, isolation, so that you can hang tight with your child.
- Chores and responsibilities; how to decide what hills to defend and which to let go of
- Play still plays a vital role in your relationship… how to inject it into daily life
- Handling “attitude” and other behaviors you may have started to see
– Jennifer, Los Angeles, CA
I feel joyful and happy and able to laugh and joke with my teens more. We spend more quality time together. I know what to bring up and what to keep to myself, and feel more in flow with the changes they are experiencing.
– Kiran, Mother of two teens, Los Angeles, CA
I think of the group often when things are hard with my teen. It’s invaluable to know I am not alone in navigating this stage of my kiddo’s life. I feel so much more connected with her and know I can support her well.
